CLIMATEGATE BOOK - Exposing the Global Warming Scam

As predicted: Gore blames hurricane on YOU

The only question is, what took him so long?  Three days ago I predicted Al would pin Hurricane Sandy on human-induced climate change and now, finally, he has.

According to Al’s blog,” Hurricane Sandy was “strengthened by the climate crisis,” because of you and me, and our continual use of fossil fuels, which he contends is forcing climate change.

“[W]e are altering the environment in which all storms develop,” Gore writes, and “As the oceans and atmosphere continue to warm, storms are becoming more energetic and powerful…As the hurricane approached the East Coast, it gathered strength from abnormally warm coastal waters.”

Let’s stop here and apply some science.  First of all, the waters of the Atlantic are not running unusually warm right now. This is hurricane season and the Gulf Stream waters are always warm this time of year.

Second, while it’s true that a hurricane can only form in water 82 degrees (F) or warmer, there is no data to suggest that water warmer than 82 degrees increases the intensity of a hurricane or frequency of hurricanes.  In fact there have been numerous studies indicating that in periods of actual global warming, hurricane formation is sub-average.  Conversely, during periods of global cooling hurricane formation is quite robust.   For example, from 1940 to 1975 the earth experienced a significant cool down.  During that time the U.S. took direct blows from ten hurricanes that were much more powerful than Sandy. You can see the details here.

Al is full of malarky. He should sit down and speak with the last several directors of the National Hurricane Center, all of whom do NOT believe in anthropogenic global warming.

Hurricanes are a natural function of the atmosphere and necessary in maintaining the earth’s temperature balance. These monster storms suck up warm air from the tropics and disperse it into the upper atmosphere where it’s transported by jet stream winds to the higher latitudes.

Thanks for piping up, Al. We were all waiting.

I object to your rebuttal on several grounds. First, why use Al as a lightning rod? Concentrate on what the scientists say, not what he says. That said, I don’t see anything wrong with his statements. First, the waters off the eastern seaboard WERE unusually warm during October (and much of the time before.) See

Second, Gore never says anything about the frequency of hurricanes. The jury is still out on that one, and many scientists do, in fact, believe that warmer oceans make fewer hurricanes. There is, however, much stronger agreement that those hurricanes are likely to be stronger.

Finally, I don’t get your link at all. If I were to take an equal number of years that were warmer, say 1975 – 2010, then there are 22 major hurricanes in that time period, vs your 10. In any case, that’s an anecdotal argument rather than a statistical one, so not scientifically valid.
