CLIMATEGATE BOOK - Exposing the Global Warming Scam

CFL Light Bulbs and Skin Cancer

The fact that the federal government has unilaterally determined the type of light bulbs we are able to purchase is beyond Orwellian. Even more bizarre is the fact that the obnoxious, curlicue Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) are a known health hazard due to their content of toxic mercury. But now there is another major cause for concern.

First the mercury.

There have been thousands of reports of these ridiculous curlicue light bulbs bursting, cracking, and sizzling in their sockets. While similar things have happened with traditional incandescent bulbs, the difference is the CFLs contain mercury–it seeps out of the CFLs and it’s extremely dangerous. In fact, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, if a CFL breaks in your home you must:

-“Have people and pets leave the room, and don’t let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out; open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more.”

- “Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one.”

- “Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces, [instead] carefully scoop up glass pieces and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.”

- “Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder; wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place towels in the glass jar or plastic bag.”

Now the latest green blunder associated with these asinine lights: they have the ability to cause skin cancer.

A study published in the journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology reveals that the CFLs emit ultraviolet radiation, which is supposed to be blocked by a phosphor coating. However, scientists from Stony Brook University on Long Island, New York noted that the protective coating was lacking, or inconsistent, allowing the emission of significant levels of ultraviolet rays.

Said the researchers, “Our study revealed that the response of healthy skin cells to UV emitted from CFL bulbs is consistent with damage from ultraviolet radiation.”

The researchers continued with a further warning: “Despite their large energy savings, consumers should be careful when using compact fluorescent light bulbs. Our research shows that it is best to avoid using them at close distances and that they are safest when placed behind an additional glass cover.”

By the way, your good, reliable, cheap incandescent lamp does not have the same effect on your skin.

This is what I describe as full-throttled eco-tyranny. In their zeal for being green, the eco-freaks have placed the population at great risk. What are we supposed to do, wear sunscreen inside the house? I’m serious! My dad died of melanoma. It was an awful way for him to pass. I had too much sun as a youth and now have to get screened for cancer every six months. Applying sunscreen is a daily routine. Now, because of these eco-fascists, I’m now not even safe inside my own home!

Same damn thing with the CAFE standards. People are now driving around in flimsy little vehicles, in some cases the size of a roll-cage with wheels. People are gonna die (and likely have many times over) because of these silly little clown cars.

Ohhh, but they get great mileage.

Sober up, you fools. We need a wholesale change in Washington, D.C.  They’re killing us.

Re CAFE standards, and Gov telling people what light bulb they should use etc:

A recent comprehensive university study in Virginia led by Drs Gayer and Viscusi
    reached rather scathing conclusions:
Consumers are not “irrational” in the choices they make and environmental benefits are “negligible”

    See http://tonn.ie Search Viscusi

The same Freedom Light Bulb website
(a site against product regulation) covers and expands on the Stony Brook study, with previous study comparisons and spectral diagrams for different light bulbs, and UV light explanation (the main problem is the UVC light normally blocked by the ozone layer).

  2. Nia says:

According to Dr. Mironova, a co-author of the study you mention, “there is no link in scientific literature between CFL exposure and cancer.”

The study measured the effect of CFLs at distances up to 14″, and the risk is easily eliminated by staying more than a foot away from the bulb, (or using double-envelope CLFs). So as long as you don’t try to tan under the bulb by putting it close to your body, you should be just fine.

  3. Nia says:

As to the mercury, the Lawrence Berkeley Lab found that doing a common-sense clean-up of a broken bulb (open a window, clean up the debris and get rid of it), you would inhale the equivalent Hg of a nibble of tuna. If you closed all the doors/windows and smashed the bulb with a hammer, you’d get the equivalent of eating a can of tuna. Do you feed your kids tuna, Brian?

Do you know where the mercury in tuna comes from? Mostly from burning coal. Consumers Union (which really has no political agenda, I don’t think) estimated that “CFLs save between 2 and 10 times more mercury from the environment than is used in the bulb because their efficiency avoids mercury pollution that would otherwise be emitted from coal-fired power plants.”

Finally, nobody’s stopping you from using incandescent bulbs. You can buy them if you want; with your book sales, I’m sure you can afford the electric bill. I choose to research the actual dangers, not spout alarmist rhetoric, and save my money.

  4. Nia says:

One last thought — people wouldn’t be as endangered in their “flimsy little vehicles” if others didn’t feel the need to drive around in tanks.

  5. Jon says:

I don’t really know where to start with this entire website. There can be no doubt humans are altering the planet for the worse, just look around today or from a plane – that used to be all vegetation down there. Surely it is better to try and limit our impact even if you don’t believe all the science, just to be safe? To try and block this for short term economic gain is both selfish and dangerous.

  6. Andrew P. says:

Nia, it’s the principle of the thing. As Brian put it, we are dealing with eco-TYRANNY: Master-Minds doing your thinking for you and taking away choice. It is invasive and pervasive. In fact, by your comment you sound like you’ve bought into this fraud 100%. Well, it’s coming, and when it’s fully in force, you won’t like it, but then it will be too late. The tyrants don’t give a rat’s ass about the environment or protecting public health; it’s all about gaining absolute power and control over all of humanity, then eventually murdering 5 billion people. They will make folks like Hitler and Stalin look like Cub Scouts in comparison.

  7. paul says:

    do comments work here

  8. paul says:

    OK there’s a good site
that covers the CFL and UV light issues
    including Stony Brook
    Tonn .ie
(join it, cant put link, it seems)

It also supports what you say about bans being irrelevant even to save energy,
with Dept of Energy etc references

  9. Nia says:

Wow, Andrew P. — jumping from encouraging the use of CFLs to murdering 5 billion people is quite a leap! No point trying to have a rational discussion with you.

  10. Ed says:

I only buy the good old stuff. The new bulbs are so expensive. It is supposed to be mitigated by their longevity. But I am pretty sure both politician and manufacturers rely on customers not being able to tell how long the bulb lived when it went out. Thus, no one knows how much money they really save, if at all. And to Nia. If I have placed in your home a radioactive source and told you it was only dangerous if you are within 14″ of it; How long would it take you to either evacuate you home or throw that stuff out? The only reason you accept the risk is because it was declared the new norm by a power which you accept to be higher and more knowledgeable than yourself. When this power is government – you should never assume they are higher, or smarter than you. They also don’t care about you or the environment. They seek power. Your gullibility is their power. When they are done with these stupid bulbs they will do to the next thing. Before you know it, EVERYTHING you will be doing will be dictated by someone else. By then it will be too late.

  11. Not to hijack this particular thread, but we would like to get some great source of LED equipment and lighting shop for our recently re-designed building. We have no idea who’s good and who is not…are you aware anything regarding this LED Light web store? They are based from California, and offer absolutely free shipping charges as well as tax-free for us. I cannot find any reviews upon them – Green Supply LLC, 43575 Mission Blvd., #510, Fremont, CA 94539 – 1 (800)860-1387
